Applications Open for Irish Language Writer in Residence 2026-2027
19 May 2026: Kildare County Council, in partnership with Maynooth University, is inviting applications from Irish language writers who have a range of high-quality published work, in poetry and/or creative prose, for the role of Writer in Residence. The residency, which will run from September 2026 to August 2027, is based at Maynooth University and marks the third such collaboration between Maynooth University, Creative Communities Kildare, and Kildare County Council’s Library and Arts Services.
The role of writer in residence was developed to provide students and the general public with the opportunity to engage with established Irish language writers and also give the writers the opportunity to progress their own projects. Previous Irish Language Writers in Residence at Maynooth University have included Ré Ó Laighléis and Dubhán Ó Longáin.
Gillian Allen, County Librarian, Kildare County Council, remarked; “Kildare Library and Arts Services and Creative Communities Kildare have benefited greatly from this collaboration with Maynooth University, to promote and support Irish language writers and allow them scope and time to further develop their writing. We also welcome their engagement at local level through the provision of community workshops and collaborative participation in our annual calendar of artistic events and our commitment to the promotion of the Irish language.”
