Kildare County Council Launches Kildare Biodiversity Week 2026
Kildare County Council is delighted to announce the launch of Kildare Biodiversity Week, which will take place from Friday, 15 May to Sunday, 24 May 2026. The week-long programme celebrates the rich variety of wildlife and habitats across County Kildare and offers an open invitation to everyone to explore, learn about and take action for local biodiversity.
The celebrations in Kildare form part of a national initiative led by the Irish Environmental Network to encourage people to connect with nature through free, locally run events. Biodiversity Week also links with the United Nations’ International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May, highlighting the global importance of protecting and restoring nature, starting in our own neighbourhoods.
Launching the programme, Cathaoirleach of the County of Kildare, Cllr Carmel Kelly said; “It is inspiring to see biodiversity being celebrated across County Kildare as nature plays a central role in our day-to-day lives. Biodiversity Week is a great opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of supporting healthy and resilient communities. It also offers a chance to enjoy Kildare’s wildlife, landscapes and green spaces, whilst learning how we can all help to protect them.”
Dr. Méabh Boylan, Biodiversity Officer, Kildare County Council, added: “I look forward to attending many of the scheduled events in the coming week, and to supporting the wonderful communities and organisations delivering inspiring walks, talks and workshops on biodiversity, across County Kildare. I would also like to take this opportunity to commend and congratulate these groups that work tirelessly throughout the year to deliver practical projects that leave space for native habitats, plants and wildlife to thrive in the towns, villages and open landscape across our beautiful county.”
A range of free events will be hosted across the county throughout the week by community groups, local experts and partner organisations. The Kildare Biodiversity Week Event Schedule has been compiled by Kildare County Council’s Biodiversity Office and is available on the website at: https://kildarecoco.ie/AllServices/Heritage/BiodiversityandNaturalHeritage/BiodiversityWeek/
